video still from separation of the atoms from the waters of non-entity, 2019, SD video and 16mm film transferred to video, silent, 3 min. loop

The title of this video is the title of an 18th century Rajastani Jain-culture gouache painting that represents a pool of dark water separated, by an internal frame, from a grouping of coloured spheres (atoms). Much of the footage in this video is 16mm found footage from the late 1940’s. In my recent work I have been inspired by the cut-up methods of William Burroughs and Brion Gysin. Working with found footage and titles-as-text is, in part, a cut-up process. I am interested in exploring what happens when written language and moving images are brought together.
